“Today, the enemy is investing in civil wars in the region and pins hope on a Shia-Sunni war to relieve itself of the concern of Islamic Awakening,” his eminence said.

Sayyed Khamenei stressed that a remaining bunch of culprits affiliated to Saddam regime alongside a group of ignorant people were currently indulging in crimes in Iraq.

The Supreme Leader underlined that what was going on now was not a war between the Sunnis and the Shiites but a war between terrorism and anti-terrorism, according to IRNA.

He said this was also a conflict between the lovers of West and those who were seeking independence for nations. “What is happening [in Iraq] is not a Shia-Sunni war. It is a war of terrorism against the opponents of terrorism and a war between pro-Westerners and the advocates of nations’ independence,” Imam Khamenei said.

Ayatollah Khamenei’s remarks were on the anniversary occasion of Haft-e Tir (July 28) when he received families of martyrs who lost their lives this day 33 years ago in a bomb blast by the terrorist Mojahedeen-e Khalq Organization.
