Jordan Detains Two Senior Brotherhood Leaders

Jordanian authorities have arrested two leaders of Jordan’s Muslim Brotherhood within 24 hours.

Jordan flagJordanian authorities have arrested two leaders of Jordan's Muslim Brotherhood within 24 hours.

"Adel Awwad was arrested and charged with 'incitement against the ruling regime'," a judicial source told media outlets on Tuesday.

Sources close to Awwad said the Brotherhood leader had been arrested over a recent sermon he delivered at a mosque in eastern Amman.

Awwad's arrest came one day after Jordanian authorities detained Brotherhood leader Mohammad Abu Jaafar for speeches he gave in which he had expressed support for the Gaza Strip during Israel's recent military onslaught on the Palestinian enclave.

"Brotherhood's Shura Council member Mohammad Saeed Bakri has been arrested," Brotherhood spokesman Murad al-Adayla told media outlets.

He linked the detention to speeches Bakri had delivered in support of the Gaza Strip during a recent Zionist military offensive on the Palestinian enclave.

According to the spokesman, Brotherhood members will communicate with Jordanian authorities to know the reason of the detention.

There has been no comment from Jordanian authorities.

Bakri had been critical of the official Jordanian stance on the Zionist offensive in the Gaza Strip, which killed at least 2,157 people and injured nearly 11,000 others.

Bakri's brother said that the Brotherhood leader faces charges of incitement against Jordanian authorities.

Last month, Jordanian Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour denied reports about planning to ban the Muslim Brotherhood in the Hashemite kingdom.
