Clashes over Land Dispute Kill 90 in South Sudan

Death toll from inter-communal clashes between rival communities in South Sudan’s Warrap State over a land dispute has now reached at least 90.

The clashes began on Friday afternoon over a disputed land between Luacjang and Ananatak, and lasted until the army and state authorities intervened Tuesday.

“The governor’s driver was killed with other 90 people and his executive vehicle belonging to the state house too has been smashed,” the commissioner said, adding that 144 others were also injured.

Warrap State caretaker Governor Akec Tong Aleu also confirmed that the clashes between the two communities had ended.

South Sudan, a country where most areas are not well demarcated and with many communities being pastoralists, communal fighting is frequent in many parts of the country since the signing of a peace agreement that gave birth to the independent South Sudan.
