Addressing the opening of the fourth summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in China’s Shanghai, Rouhani said the Syrian crisis’ flames are “stoked by certain regional and international actors who funnel weapons and intelligence to and embolden the extremist groups.” He warned that continued insecurity and instability in Syria can spill over the borders and “adversely affect CICA members with its terrorist extremism.”

Rouhani stressed the need for a national dialogue between the Syrian government and the unarmed opposition.

On the nuclear talks between Tehran and the six world powers, Rouhani said talks can result in a final deal by choosing a win-win approach, but stressed that such an approach should exclude “excessive demands and threats.”

He called on the UN General Assembly to pay heed to the situation of the Palestinian people and their sufferings after the occupation of their homeland by the Zionist regime, expressing regret that the international community is turning a blind eye to Israeli expansionist policies.

The Iranian president is among 11 heads of state and 10 chiefs of international organizations who have attended the two-day summit, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon.
